Are you there?

about

Once upon a time there were three gay men in their 30's who bought condos within a block of each other in Washington, D.C.

Each of them lived his life in forward motion, each a very different man. But the three were intertwined with each other - and with the myriad of friends, lovers, boyfriends, acquaintances, detractors, tricks, groupies, lost souls and wannabes they met along the way.

Theirs is the life of modern urban Americans, complete with wild parties and jetset travel, of beach houses and rooftop pools. Of late nights awake in bed, and long drives in rainstorms.

Lost opportunities, and slips of the tongue. Hard work, great victories. Secrets in the vault, regrets left unsaid. Exhilarating joy. Agonizing heartbreak.

This is their story.

Kevin - Having lived in Washington for almost twenty years, Kevin feels like he's seen it all. Oddly enough, unlike New Yorkers who become jaded and cynical (as well as the amateurs who come to D.C. and make sweeping pronouncements from day one), he believes that two decades in Washington actually restore a person's faith in human kindness, and the power of self-confidence and humility. It's all about understanding what friendship really means. Lives a block from Sean in Logan Circle, with Clancy.

Sean - Gregarious and ultra-liberal, Sean radiates a boyish exuberance that matches his appearance (which is holding up better than he deserves, given the lifestyle he led in his 20's). One doesn't have to scratch the surface too deeply to reach his inner child, a quality that often leads him to play the spoiler when others are taking life too seriously. Sean loves the rush of city life and does quite a bit of volunteering in the community -- mostly for the greater good, but also because you find yourself at the best events that way. Sean prides himself on being there for his friends, has a deep & abiding appreciation for wayward youth, and is always ready when the prospect of an adventure to some far-away locale presents itself. He lives in Logan Circle with Pongo.

Roy - Bespectacled, thirtysomething preppie and a self-described "fly on the wall." Quite often, Roy is the person who says things to people that they don't always want to hear, and who often does things others don't have the guts to do themselves. Loves to travel, but never does it alone, so he often tags along with others on trips. Lives in Penn Quarter.

Elaine - An old friend of Roy's who has slowly become friendly with most of the gang. One thing everyone agrees on is that Elaine is the life of every party. No one tends to see her except out at the clubs - and she can often be seen at Spank and at Nation on the same night. When she arrives, things seem to always take off, and just like Batgirl, she's gone when the lights come up. Unlike some other denizens of the Washington nightlife, she is always very agreeable, only very occasionally does she get to be a little too much. But no matter, as she comes and goes with great speed. Lives in the West End (i.e. the Hinterlands], but no one has ever seen the inside of her apartment.

Lulu - She is as comfortable working the room at Halo, dancing all night at La Demence, or holding court at Chinawhite as she is gliding across the floor at Cafe Milano, or ushering in a group of friends past the bouncers at Spank. While "international playgirl" doesn't fit for those who know her well, the objective observer would take one look at this stunning, long-legged Brazilian woman in Burberry and Prada, zipping around the world with her Louis Vuitton bag in tow, and come to a different conclusion. Lives in Georgetown.

Madison - Jeff's Admin Assistant -- think a cross between Jennifer Marlowe and Karen Walker. While living in Logan Circle and working in Georgetown, Madison clings to the belief there are straight men who look good in Diesel jeans, have good jobs and aren't unusually close with their mother. Born in Kansas City - the right buckle of the Bible Belt. After a few drunken years as Jeff's fairy princess (while studying costume design) she graduated and moved to Los Angeles. She costumed Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the faux Washingtonians of The West Wing, as well as the girls of Charlie's Angels on the big screen, and the hep cats in The Spy Who Shagged Me. But a career ending injury, a divorce and 13 years in Los Angeles sent Madison east to the nation's capital -- single for the first time in over a decade, and living alone for the first time ever. Frequently seen around town with Ran and Jeff, and often has secret nights out on the town with Elaine. Lives next door to Sean and across the street from Kevin, in Logan Circle.

John - He has known Sean since before many of Sean’s recent boyfriends were born. (A slight exaggeration, but it’s only a matter of time until Sean dates a 15 year-old and makes this a true statement.) Former roommates in Rockville and later neighbors in Falls Church, Sean and John are related through the feline masters they serve -- the brothers Pongo and Pyewacket. John has had adventures with Sean, Kevin, and Roy (and others) while vacationing in Fort Lauderdale, New York and Paris together, but he is a gentleman who values discretion over vicious gossip and will not divulge the depravity to which he was witness...unless asked, of course. To put food on the table (and in the cat’s dish), John is a personal trainer and massage therapist—that’s right, he is certified and paid to work with people who are sweaty and/or naked. Still lives in Falls Church.

Ken - Met Sean at an office party, five years his junior. They had a fling, but Ken was "straight" at the time. Began hanging out with the rest of them, and took a little too long to come out of the closet. Finally did, moved to the neighborhood, and is finding his way through gay life without much experience. Lives a block from Kevin, Sean and Madison in Logan Circle.

Eric - Lives in Logan Circle.

Sasha - Originally from the city of Chestnut trees, Sasha moved with his family to the States in the mid-90's in search of better life. A current Baltimorean, all of his social life is in DC where he spends most of his free time. He values friendship above all, has an optimistic personality and believes that good things happen to good people (and sometimes even to naughty people...). He is usually reserved and quiet; nonetheless, if you get to know Sasha, he can be quite entertaining. Lives in Baltimore.

Claudia - Was a whirledian back when Kevin was a gangly teenager, living in her parents' T.V. room in Ibirapuera and skipping class. Perhaps Kevin's oldest friend on Earth, and now partner in international consulting-plus-clubbing adventures, Clô is a living embodiment of the superfuture Brazilian woman: a highly-respected and successful professional, a full-time single mother (whose kids are brilliant and love her eternally), a sexy clotheshorse, a circuit party diva (who has gained admittance even to the most exclusively gay of parties around the world), and a trusted friend. Lives in São Paulo.

Dane - Lives in Arlington.

Jack - Jack Finney was born in Louisiana, but didn't stay there very long. He moved to Washington with his Dad, where he met Elaine in his teens, came out, became a flight attendant, bounced around from domicile to base to crash pad and ended up back in D.C. Doesn't say much. Actions speak for him. Temporarilly homeless and wandering. Currently in San Francisco.

Matt - Lives in New York.

Steve - A dear friend of Kevin's, who used to live in Washington but moved to France before the turn of the century. He travels the world, and gets back to DC often, but is slowly making a better life for himself in Europe. Like Dane and Sean, he is a long-past refugee of Pittsburgh. After turning 30 and gaining his French permanent residency, Steve blesses the wonder of life, and the newness of living. ...In Paris.

Christopher - On the day Christopher was born in the District lo these many years ago, his mother groaned, his father wept, into the dangerous world he leapt; helpless, naked, piping loud—like a fiend hid in a cloud. He loves the sweet burn of Kentucky bourbon and the raucous squawk of a hen hizzy. Goals include becoming a NASCAR legend and meeting Gene Hackman. He currently lives in the Dupont Circle/Adams Morgan/U Street nebula, with a perpetual view of the Rottweiler that sits in a window of the cross-street building. Sometimes the Rottweiler talks to him. He is also terrified of bees. (not to be confused with Matt's husband in New York...different guy)

Filip - Lives in Dupont Circle (since his building is on the west side of 17th Street)..

Chuck - Quiet, kind, and thoughtful, Chuck saves the wave-making for behind closed doors. A devastating cutie with soulful eyes and a radiant smile that brings comfort to anyone. His dry sense of humor keeps everyone on their toes. Lives with Dirty in Adams Morgan.

Dirty - Known to commoners as merely "Greg," Dirty got to know Sean, Kevin, Matt and the rest of the guys over the course of some splendidly-sordid weekends at Heather House during the summer of 2004.. Appropriately, Sean met Dirty at Secrets, and upon sight of his namesake shirt, knew they would be instant friends. Though he may never admit it outright, Dirty is an avid nude gardener and black belt in Tae Quon Do. Lives with Chuck in Adams Morgan.

David - A native of the Washington area, David has lived in Logan Circle since January 2002. Besides the obvious reasons for living in the island of fabulousness called Logan, David loves living here because of the easy walks out to the Hinterlands (Gallery Place, the Mall, Georgetown, Adams Morgan, etc.). He reminds himself five times a week of how grateful he is to live in such a wonderful place everytime he heads out to the facist state of Virginia for work. Loves to bike, skate, blade, and to travel.

Clancy - Kevin's dog, a pound rescue in 2000 who was injured and days away from being put to sleep when Kevin adopted him. He was a regular at Heather House in Rehoboth before its demise, and always thinks he's going there when he gets in the car. A psychic in Provincetown told Kevin that Clancy is the reincarnation of a best friend and advisor in a previous life, named "Dancing Deer" --a Native American shaman who used to watch over Kevin when he was allegedly a tribal chief, and even held his hand when Kevin died in that life from an assasination by fellow tribesmen. According to the psychic, "Dancing Deer" is back because he was concerned for Kevin and wanted to do a better job of ensuring his happiness in this life.. The psychic was never informed that the only thing Clancy knew how to do -- inexplicably -- when he was rescued from the pound was to dance around on his hind legs for cookies. He is also a golden brown color, rubs the top of his head against the furniture every morning, and shows intense adoration for his owner. Lives in Logan Circle.

Pyewacket - Brother of Pongo, he is John's cat and is the "country mouse" of the two felines. Having jaws that bite and claws that catch, he is the natural predator of the frumious Bandersnatch. Lives in bucolic Falls Church, but vacations in Logan Circle.

Pongo - Brother of Pyewacket, he is Sean's cat and is the "city mouse" of the two felines. Lives in Logan Circle, but vacations in Falls Church. Regal, beautiful, and quite soft to the touch, Pongo is a cat's cat to the core, but will be very affectionate if he likes your attitude. He has an exceptionally strong hunter's instinct and impressive aerialist skills, a combination that keeps his habitat protected from any flying or crawling intruder.
